VI. Cryogenic Insulation

PIALITE Perlite insulation Sectionals in the form of pipe covers and boards, primarily molded from perlite powder bound together by an inorganic binder (sodium silicate) and reinforcing fiber. Completely non-flammable, they are widely used as insulation for heated equipment, vessels, and piping.

The major advantages of PIALITE Perlite Insulation Sectional have are:
- ASBESTOS-FREE
- ACID-PROOF/NON-CORROSIVE
- HIGH THERMAL INSULATION EFFICIENCY
- HIGH WATER REPELLENCY

PIALITE PERLITE CRYOGENIC INSULATION

Because of its excellent thermal properties, non-combustibility, and low moisture retention, perlite is an ideal and inexpensive insulation for cryogenic applications, providing dependable results at a range of low-temperatures. Expanded perlite is also essentially non-hygroscopic, which makes it suitable for use under vacuum conditions. The increased production of liquefied gases having boiling points as low as - 270C has created demand for storage facilities capable of economically reducing evaporation losses. The majority of these storage vessels are of double wall construction with annular space for insulation filling.

The thermal conductivity of perlite at atmospheric pressure is dependent upon, and increases approximately linearly with density. Particle sizes of perlite also has some effect, although minor on perlite’s thermal conductivity. It is therefore important to consider both density and particle size when perlite is used as cryogenic insulation. The fragility of the product should also be considered, as too much handling will break down the low density perlite material, thus forming a much higher density material.
